ERECTION

Once you purchase a building from us you are connected with a BSR / CSR. Customer Service will assist with order processing and project management. Our Field Service team will be there for you after the shipment of the building.  Every project has erection drawings that accompany the shipment that indicate the locations of every member and specific or generic details for the project. Erection guides are available upon request.

The answer to this question will really depend on the location of your property. If you live somewhere that has all four seasons, we recommend erecting the building before the ground begins to freeze. That generally starts in the late fall. If you live somewhere that doesn’t have such harsh winters you can erect the structure any time.

There are several instances where field welding may be required; long-bay purlins and conventional roof joists at strut locations, mezzanine joists and some areas of angle bracing.  The majority of structures will not require field welding.

The columns of our buildings can be anchored to piers or a slab. Therefore, similar to a pier, our buildings can be built over a basement as long as it is attached to the foundation like it would be attached to the edge of a slab or a pier.

In order to attach dry wall to the interior of your buildings you will need to add vertical steel or wood studs in between columns and then attach the dry wall by screwing it onto the studs like you would with any dry wall.

STEEL BUILDINGS 101

Steel frame structures are not noisier than conventional wood frame structures when properly insulated.

Cornerstone—Star’s parent company—is the largest manufacturer of exterior building products in North America, servicing the commercial, residential and repair & remodel markets. With more than 100+ years of experience and a family of industry-leading brands that span the breadth of the markets we serve, we’re uniquely positioned to provide best-in-class products and services our customers and communities when and where they need them.

Steel pricing is cost-competitive when compared to conventional building materials. Choosing a metal building allows for reduced labor costs and expedited construction times. Since metal framing can be installed on a faster timeline than tilt-up and precast concrete, the expedited schedule not only saves on labor costs, but, for commercial properties, revenue can start being collected that much faster.

To protect the confidentiality of our customers, we do not publish a list of customers or locations. However, you may call and speak to one of our district managers to see if there’s a building in your area and if so we can contact the owner on your behalf.

We are a one-stop shop for commercial exteriors and provide limitless color and design options such as stone, siding, trim, gutters and accents that allow you the flexibility to truly customize each project.

We can help you find the perfect builder for your project. Visit our ready to build page and complete the form.

Delivery will depend on the complexity of your building and can run anywhere from 8 to 14 weeks.

The erection drawings provide the contact information for Field Service personnel.  One should always inventory the materials and note missing or damaged materials as soon as possible.

In most cases you will need a permit to build a steel building. For example, some locations do not require a permit to build agricultural buildings. You should always check with your local building inspector before purchasing a building

Steel cannot get mold, but a steel building can. Insulation, carpeting, wood, and wall paneling are all places for mold to take hold. To keep it out, thoroughly plan ventilation, seal any hole water can enter, and prevent condensation.

Construction of a steel building or metal structure is similar to the construction of most other buildings and it all starts with a strong foundation. The builder group provides the reactions, quantity, size and pattern of the anchor rods, the foundation design is NOT part of the builder group.

Steel roofs last more than 50 years while traditional roofs last about 17 years.

There are several insulation solutions available, including everything from fiberglass insulation, spray foam, R-Seal, IMP or rigid board. Each type can be designed to give you the R-values you want. Contact us directly for more information.

Typically, bolts are not exterior unless the building is open because they are Zinc plated.  Roof / wall screws may have washers.

Yes, we offer several options for standing seam roofs.

No.There may be field drilling required for field located members such as roof support members, etc.

No, steel buildings will not interfere with radio, television, or Wi-Fi reception.

Lightning strikes are not a danger in a steel building because the steel is a positive conductor to the earth. This allows the energy to be sent straight to the ground.

Star manufactures buildings using both 24 and 26 gauge steel.

FRAMING AND BRACING

Primary frames span the width of a building and are designed for full bay loading. Our primary steel building framing includes interior building frames, building end frames (rafters, corner posts and end posts), building bracing and crane systems. End frames are typically designed for ½ bay loading

Star’s secondary structural metal building framing systems include purlins, girts, eave struts, base members, flange bracing, gable angles, clips and more. These essential components support roof and wall coverings, carry exterior loads and can be formed to fit specific project requirements.

Each project is engineered to withstand specific wind or seismic load requirements using components from our extensive bracing system allowing for diaphragm bracing, cable bracing, rod bracing or portal frames.

Rod bracing (also called X-bracing) is a tension-only bracing system. It may be located in the roof and walls of a building between frame members, transferring longitudinal forces to the foundation.

Cable bracing (like rod bracing) is a tension-only X-bracing system. It is one of the most efficient ways to transfer longitudinal loads to the foundation in smaller low-rise buildings; however it has application limitations due to capacity constraints for buildings with mezzanines, cranes, or in high seismic areas.

When bracing must occur in locations where doors or other accessories would interfere with rod-bracing, a portal frame may be used. A portal frame is comprised of two columns and a rafter made of built-up material and is attached to the web of the sidewall columns. Portal frames (typically) have columns, attachment to web (bracketed) is an option.

Flange braces are the structural members that attach purlins, girts, and eave struts to primary structural members (columns or rafters). They are used to prevent the main frame from twisting or buckling laterally under the load. Flange braces are an essential structural part and must be installed properly at all locations.
